Bought this piece for myself many years ago and it is as awesome as it looks in the picture. The gold tone parts are their own layers. They don't really turn, nor do I think they're supposed to. But they will kind of swivel if you try hard enough, though I don't recommend it. As with many of Alchemy Gothic's pieces, an amazing amount of visual detail has gone into the piece, so you won't be disappointed on that note.
The only down side, (hence the 4 stars instead of 5) is the fact that the pendant likes to flip itself back to front rather frequently (ie; if you lean forward so that it swings away from your body, depending on the angle that you upright yourself at, it'll rotate really easily), so it would've been nice if there was something more decorative than the logo on the back. I've amended this problem by altering the chain so that there's two connecting pieces on the left and right loops that the snakes form and it works, but it would've been nice if that detail had been worked into the design.
Other than that it's a pretty durable piece under normal use, that you'll be able to enjoy for a long time.

This is a great piece, however you can buy it at ThinkGeek.com for about $20 cheaper. I really like mine and it hold up well.
